AI & The Project Manager’s Wonderland: A Journey Through Possible Futures
February 20, 2025
This is a book written by Alina Piddubna, a seasoned project, program, and portfolio management expert, who has been at the forefront of technological transformation in project leadership. It is based on deep professional insights, real-world experience, and forward-looking analysis of how AI is reshaping our work — and ourselves.
🚀 AI & The Project Manager’s Wonderland will be published here, as a series of blog posts, unveiling one chapter at a time.
- ✨ This is not just about technology.
- ✨ It is an exploration of meaning, our profession, and inner transformation.
- ✨ It is a crossroads between AI and human thinking, where what matters is not what AI does, but how we interpret it.
Every project manager is an architect of uncertainty. We create order where none exists, make decisions in chaos, and navigate change without seeing the full picture. But what happens when AI enters the game, saying:
"I can do this for you. I am faster, more accurate, and unbiased. Do you even need to be here?"
And then the fundamental question arises:
- 🔹 Who are we if AI takes control of processes, forecasts, and analytics?
- 🔹 How is our profession changing — and are we changing along with it?
- 🔹 Is the future of project management a utopia, a dystopia, or a new balance?
Deep Thinking. Inner Transformation. AI as a Mirror of the Future.
"What if AI didn’t just change project management, but changed us?"
📌 What is this book about?
🚀 AI & The Project Manager’s Wonderland consists of 12 chapters, 12 mirrors, 12 portals into possible futures.
Each chapter reflects a fundamental question, one that concerns not only project management practitioners, but any manager:
- 💡 I am good enough to manage this project?
- 💡 Does the client really value and respect me?
- 💡 How can I survive in this information flow and multitasking?
- 💡 Am I just a small and insignificant bureaucrat while my team is the one who brings value?
- 💡 Will AI replace my role in the future?
- 💡 Will I be fired if I make a mistake?
- 💡 Can I trust my team or should I control a lot?
- 💡 Can I trust my team or should I control a lot?
And many more.
📖 Each chapter is not a theoretical discussion but a living story.
At the center of this journey is Zoe Harper, a project manager who suddenly finds herself in the Land of AI, a world where automation is the law and humans are merely participants in its algorithms.
📌 Why does this matter?
- 🤖 AI is not just a tool — it challenges our very value.
- 🧠 Project management is not just about processes; it's about decision-making, working with people, and navigating meaning.
- 🔮 The future of our profession depends on how we redefine our role.
- 🚀 This is not just an analysis of AI in project management. It is a guide for project managers to enter this new era consciously and intentionally.
📌 Who is this for?
- 👤 For those seeking conscious decision-making in a world of automated predictions.
- 👥 For those who feel that the speed of technology is surpassing the speed of human thinking — and want to adapt.
- 🚀 For those standing at the threshold of change — who want to be architects of the future, not just observers.
- 💡 For those ready not only to manage AI but to understand how AI is changing us.
📖 Each chapter is a portal into one of these possible realities.
❓ Which reality will you step into?
Introduction
Is project management not just your job, but a part of who you are?
If so, that means you’ve probably asked yourself at least one (or all) of these questions at some point:
- 💡 "Am I actually good at this, or have I just been winging it really, really well?"
- 💡 "What happens if I lose control and everything falls apart?"
- 💡 "Does doing more mean I’m actually achieving something?"
- 💡 "Am I just an overpaid coordinator, and everyone but me knows that?"
- 💡 "Will AI replace me while I’m busy updating another status report?"
- 💡 "What if I make a mistake, and my career is over?"
- 💡 "Can I trust my team, or should I just micro-manage everything to death?"
- 💡 "Does the client even care that I exist?"
- 💡 "What if I miss a critical risk and only realize it when everything is on fire?"
- 💡 "Is AI making my life easier, or is it just confusing me faster?"
Welcome to the collective PM existential crisis.
For the past ten years, I have been coaching and training project managers, program managers, and portfolio leaders. And the most surprising discovery I’ve made?
It doesn’t matter how many projects you’ve managed, how many certifications you have, or how many times you’ve saved a failing project from disaster.
We all struggle with the same doubts.
The only difference is that some of us say them out loud, while others pretend they have everything under control.
And then AI arrived. And suddenly, the comfortable, quiet "Who am I, really?" crisis turned into "Will I even have a job in 10 years?"
Who Am I to Write This Book?
I am a project manager — by profession and by heart. And, apparently, that’s exactly what I’m supposed to be.
One year ago, in the middle of one of those "Who am I and why am I here?" existential crises, I did something I thought was a stroke of genius — because when you have no idea what you’re doing with your life, obviously, the best person to ask is AI.
So, like a true overachiever, I took my MBTI test results, my VIA from the Institute of Character strengths, uploaded them to ChatGPT, and asked:
"What is my ideal profession?"
Now, I half-expected something dramatic.
- 💡 “Alina, you were meant to be an astronaut.”
- 💡 “You should leave everything and become a Michelin-star chef.”
- 💡 “Clearly, you are the lost heir to a royal throne.”
But no. AI — being the cold, calculated, and painfully logical creature that it is — looked at my data and, with absolutely zero emotion, spat out:
- 📌 Project Management.
- 📌 Management Consulting.
- 📌 Running a business.
I stared at the screen, waiting for it to say “Just kidding, you’re actually destined to be a world-famous philosopher.” But it didn’t.
And so, there I was. Doubting everything about my career, only for AI to tell me I was already exactly where I was supposed to be.
Why This Book?
Because project management is changing.
Because AI is not just a tool — it’s shifting the way we think about work, decisions, and even our value.
Because PMs are now faced with three choices:
- 🚀 Lead the transformation and use AI as an amplifier of human intelligence.
- ⚠️ Ignore AI and slowly become irrelevant.
- 💡 Panic, do nothing, and hope AI is just a phase.
I don’t have all the answers. But I do know that the profession is at a crossroads, and we need to talk about it.
What This Book Is (And What It’s Not)
- 📌 This is not a guide on how to use AI tools. You don’t need me for that. Google exists.
- 📌 This is not an academic paper. I have read enough of those to know that if I wrote one, even I wouldn’t want to read it.
- 📌 This is a journey — through the chaos of AI, the absurdity of our profession, and the deep, sometimes uncomfortable questions we need to ask ourselves if we want to stay relevant.
Because here’s the thing:
- 🚀 AI is here to stay.
- 🚀 Project management is evolving.
- 🚀 And you, my friend, get to decide — will you be the PM who leads this transformation, or the one who panics every time AI generates a better-looking report than you?
So, If You’re Still Here…
This book is my attempt to figure it out. To untangle the hype from the reality, the fear from the opportunity, and the existential crisis from the actual problem.
You may not agree with everything I say. That’s fine.
But what I can promise you is:
- ✔ Deep thought.
- ✔ Sharp irony.
- ✔ Provocative ideas.
- ✔ And hopefully, a moment of inspiration (or at least a good laugh at the absurdity of it all).
So, if you’re still here — welcome to AI & PM Wonderland.
Let’s get lost together.
🚀 Alina
