PDU · GUIDE

PDUs: the unit that keeps your PMI certification active

If you hold a PMP, PMI-ACP, PfMP, or any other PMI certification, PDUs are how you prove you're still developing.

THE BASICS

What is a PDU?

PDU stands for Professional Development Unit. It is the measuring unit PMI uses to track your ongoing professional development after you earn a certification.

1 PDU = 1 hour of qualifying learning or professional activity.

PDUs are required as part of PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. Every PMI certification expires after 3 years unless you earn and report enough PDUs to renew it. Miss the deadline and your certification is suspended.

There are no shortcuts. But there are smart ways to earn PDUs that also build real capability.

KEY DISTINCTION

Contact hours and PDUs: same activity, two different functions

This is the question most people get wrong, and it matters.

Contact training hours are hours of formal PM education required before you can apply to sit a PMI exam. They are the entry condition - proof that you have had structured instruction before attempting certification.

  • PMP requires 35 contact hours of formal PM education
  • CAPM requires 23 contact hours
  • PMI-ACP requires 21 contact hours in agile practices

PDU are earned after you already hold a certification, to keep it active through ongoing professional development.

Where they overlap: The same course can serve both purposes at once. If you attend an InStar PMP Exam Prep program (35 hours), those 35 hours simultaneously count as your 35 required contact hours for PMP exam eligibility AND as 35 PDUs toward any existing PMI certification you already hold.

HOW PDUs ARE CATEGORIZED

The PMI Talent Triangle

Not all PDUs are equal. PMI requires that your education PDUs cover a specific mix of skills defined by the PMI Talent Triangle - a framework of three competency areas every project professional needs.

WoW
Ways of Working

Technical project management skills: predictive (waterfall), agile, hybrid, design thinking. How projects actually get done.

PS
Power Skills

Interpersonal and leadership skills: collaborative leadership, communication, empathy, innovative mindset, stakeholder influence.

BA
Business Acumen

Strategic and organizational skills: organizational context, aligning projects to business strategy, decision-making with incomplete information.

Minimum PDUs per category. Most PMI certifications require a minimum number of PDUs in each category per renewal cycle. PMP holders must earn at least 8 PDUs in each of the three areas; the remaining PDUs can be in any category.

Shared across certifications

If you hold multiple certifications, PDUs can often be shared across them. Report once, apply to all eligible certifications.

PDUs carry forward

PDUs earned in the last year of your 3-year cycle can be applied to the next cycle. PDUs earned in the first two years cannot.

CATEGORIES

Two types of PDUs: Education and Giving Back

PDUs fall into two broad categories.

MOST PDUs
Education PDUs

Earned by learning: courses, events, reading, online learning, coaching and mentoring received. Must follow the Talent Triangle distribution requirements.

  • Courses from PMI Authorized Training Partners (pre-approved)
  • PMI events, webinars, and conferences
  • University or academic programs
  • Online self-directed learning
  • Formal coaching or mentoring received
UP TO 25 PDUs (PMP)
Giving Back PDUs

Earned by contributing to the profession: teaching, writing, presenting, volunteering, or working as a project professional.

  • Creating knowledge: articles, presentations, podcasts, teaching
  • Volunteering: applying PM skills in non-profit contexts
  • Working as a professional (up to a defined limit per cycle)
For PMP holders: a maximum of 25 PDUs per cycle can come from Giving Back activities. The remaining 35 must come from Education.

FAQ

Common questions about PDUs

When can I start earning PDUs?+

As soon as you earn your first PMI certification. Activities completed before you earned your certification do not count.

Can one activity count for multiple certifications?+

Yes. If you hold a PMP and a PMI-ACP, one course can earn PDUs toward both. Report it once, apply it where eligible.

Can one activity cover multiple Talent Triangle areas?+

Yes. A course covering both delivery methods and stakeholder communication can be split between Ways of Working and Power Skills. Use your best judgment.

What happens if I don't earn enough PDUs in time?+

Your certification is suspended. You have a grace period to complete the missing PDUs and reinstate. If you do not act, your certification expires and you must re-apply and re-sit the exam.

Do InStar courses qualify for PDUs?+

Yes. InStar is a PMI Authorized Training Partner Premier. All InStar courses are pre-approved for PDUs and classified against the Talent Triangle.

How do I know which Talent Triangle area a PDU belongs to?+

For InStar courses, the classification is confirmed in your course confirmation and certificate. For other activities, see pmi.org/talent-triangle - PMI explicitly says to use your best judgment.
